WHMIS 2015 Pictograms Animations

For the Shadowbox Learning Services WHMIS 2015 e-learning course, I created nine 5 second animations for the pictograms section : one for each pictogram slide.

The idea is to visually convey the meaning of each pictogram as they are introduced and transform into the pictogram icon. Some were pretty simple, like the flame. Others, like the exclamation mark, were more difficult to conceptualize because of their more abstract meaning. Or in the case of the biohazardous infectious materials which was originally designed to not look like anything as to avoid confusion.

The trickiest part was making the animation videos line up perfectly with the static pictogram image and slide background in Storyline. Due to the limited nature and weird quirks of working with Storyline, this turned out to be 50% planning and 50% guess and check work.

FYI, WHMIS is the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. Pretty much every business in Canada is required by law to provide WHMIS training to it’s employees even if they do not directly work with hazardous materials. Originally created 1988, it was later align to the Globally Harmonized System(GHS) in 2015. Thus WHMIS 2015.
